Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey
Lackey’s Valdemar series is one of her most well-known works, and it can be a little daunting knowing where to start. The series is comprised of several mini-series and standalone novels, all set in the same fantasy world.
The easiest way to start reading the Valdemar books is in publication order. The first book in the series, Arrows of the Queen, was published in 1987. Lackey continued to write Valdemar novels for the next 20 years, with the most recent installment coming out in 2007.
If you want to read the Valdemar books in chronological order, however, things get a bit more complicated. Many of the books take place concurrently, and some characters even appear in multiple books. Reading chronologically can help you get a better sense of the interconnectedness of the stories, but it’s not strictly necessary to enjoy the individual books.

Valdemar short stories
Valdemar short stories can be broadly divided into two types: those featuring Companions and those without. If you want to read the Valdemar books in order, we recommend starting with Arrow’s Fall, which features the origin story of Talia, one of Valdemar’s most famous Companions. From there, you can read the three other books in the Tales of Valdemar series, which follow Talia and her companions on various adventures. Finally, you can read The Last Herald-Mage trilogy, which is a prequel to the Tales series and chronicles the early years of Vanyel Ashkevron, Valdemar’s most powerful Herald-Mage.

The Valdemar graphic novels are a series of fantasy novels written by Mercedes Lackey and published by DAW Books. The novels are based on the fictional world of Valdemar, a country located in the south-eastern corner of the continent of Europa.
