Helloween History
Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg, Northern Germany. The band is the brainchild of Kai Hansen and Markus Grosskopf, who recruited singer Michael Kiske and guitarist Piet Sielck. Hansen’s previous band, Iron Fist, had broken up shortly before he founded Helloween, which began as a solo project for him.
The band’s first lineup released two albums before Kiske was replaced by Andi Deris in 1993. The new lineup released four more albums before drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg committed suicide in 1995; he was replaced by Uli Kusch for the following album, Better Than Raw (1998). Helloween subsequently fired Kusch and re-hiredDeris, who has remained with the band since. At this point in their career, Helloween started to move away from their earlier speed metal roots and began experimenting with different styles on each successive album.
Helloween has been extremely influential in the power metal genre; they were one of the earliest bands to combine speed metal with melody and theatrics to create what would become known as “European power metal”. They have inspired many other bands such as Blind Guardian, DragonForce, Powerwolf and HammerFall.
In 2020, after several years of rumors and speculation, it was finally announced that Helloween would be embarking on a joint tour with Swedish heavy metal legends Hammerfall in 2022. This will be the first time the two bands have ever toured together and is sure to be an unforgettable experience for all fans of European power metal!
On September 4th, 2020 Helloween released a statement detailing their upcoming 15th studio album entitled “Pumpkins United”, which is set to be released on December 4th through Nuclear Blast Records. The album will feature 14 tracks (12 brand new songs + 2 re-recorded classics) and will mark the return of both Andi Deris and Michael Kiske to the fold after 25 years apart! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event for all fans of Helloween!
